Resource List Resource Consolidation_4_17_f Webinar Recording Pandemics and Dental Practices: Ethical Challenges Response to the Shortage of Personal Protective Equipment The leadership of the American College of Dentists has engaged in ongoing discussions regarding the redistribution of personal protective equipment (PPE) that currently resides in the inventory of the dental workforce community. In many states, this voluntary redistribution by the dental community is already well established and offsetting critical need shortages in emergency rooms and other hospital settings. The following list of items have been included in the redistribution efforts: Gloves Gowns/aprons Masks and respirators Spectacles/goggles Face shields The American College of Dentists applauds these efforts and local initiatives to reduce the morbidity and mortality associated with COVID-19 pandemic. ACD Section leaders are encouraged to engage with their component dental society members to assist in the priority reallocation of these critical shortage items to those personnel who are charged with caring for those who are already experiencing the wrath of this virulent pathogen. The dental workforce is committed to stopping the spread of the virus and prioritizing resources as we continue to meet our ethical, professional and societal obligations by providing care for our emergency patients, trauma patients and those patients in pain. From the Harvard School of Dental Medicine and the National Team Leader of the COVID-19 Health Literacy Project The COVID-19 Health Literacy Project is sharing a multilingual, evidence-based, and expert-reviewed COVID-19 resource in 35+ languages. A team of medical and dental students produced this clearinghouse and translated accessible COVID-19 information into 35+ languages to help all patients, especially immigrants and non-English speaking communities, stay informed and healthy. Our materials include fact sheets on COVID-19 prevention, management, pregnancy, and information for children. Our materials are carefully reviewed and vetted by physicians and faculty members at Harvard Medical School. These materials are freely available to the general public without any copyright restrictions. We are committed to actively supporting those measures necessary to limit exposure to this emerging health threat. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), controlling exposures to occupational infections is a fundamental method of protecting health care personnel. Traditionally, a hierarchy of controls has been used as a means of determining how to implement feasible and effective control solutions. The hierarchy ranks controls according to their reliability and effectiveness and includes such controls as engineering controls, administrative controls, and ends with personal protective equipment (PPE). We encourage healthcare facilities to report any supply disruptions to deviceshortages@fda.hhs.gov. CDC offers interim guidance for healthcare facilities and healthcare professionals. The American Dental Association COVID-19 site additionally provides recommendations for Dental Health Care Professionals (DHCP). These recommendations are based on what we know about COVID-19 and are subject to change as we learn more. For the dental touch point of care, we suggest the following considerations at a minimum: *Explore alternatives to face-to-face triage and visits. *Postpone elective procedures, surgeries, and non-urgent outpatient visits. Topics range from consent to pain management to patient relationships and are valuable teaching and learning tools for professors as well as whole practices. Deemed an essential national project and supported by our Foundation, several of the videos are available on this site with the complete catalog available on the ACD YouTube Channel .
